Strengthening of Student Support and Welfare through SAE BAJA National Level Event.
An engineer appears to thrive on competition at student level due to resonant energy present inside them. This is in reference to provide platform for engineering students to show their intellectual skills and skills inside the events organised at National and global levels. SAE BAJA is an intercollegiate engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate engineering students. The objective of the competition is to introduce modern automobile design projects and their related challenges. Each team is competing to have its design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. The students must function as a team to design, build, test, promote and compete a vehicle within the limits of the rules, also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities. Each team’s goal is to design and build a prototype of a rugged, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the non-professional weekend off-road enthusiast. The vehicle must be safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive. It should be able to negotiate rough terrain without damage.

The teams need to build a simple all-terrain vehicle for recreation purpose that is aesthetically and ergonomically sound while still being a fun and durable machine in the real world conditions. The evaluation process for the BAJA SAEINDIA is a two round process and students have to clear the Virtual Baja preliminary round before they start manufacturing their vehicle for the main events. The teams are judged on six main parameters in the Virtual BAJA event which are – their knowledge of the rule book, the design of the vehicle, the project plan, the design methodology and the design evaluation plain. A total of 400 points are available for each team’s design and the top 120 teams were selected this year to complete in the main event. The evaluation process in the main event is a different ball game altogether and the students finally got to showcase their finished buggy’s to the judges. In the static tests the vehicle are evaluation on various factors such as cost, aesthetics and the quality of the fabrication. There are also many dynamic tests such as acceleration. Braking, maneuverability over all terrain and a hill climb test. But none of these tests are more grueling than the endurance race where the drivers and vehicle are pushed to their limits till a winner emerges. We have participating groups every year. This tradition shows the passion for the activity.SAE members develop the car and compete in the events. Many students are attracted to our institute owing to encouragement of ours to this activity. Many passionate students have been appointed by different automotive companies. Some students have pursued higher education in the fiels of robotics, advanced automobile. In SAE BAJA 2017, which was held at IIT Ropar, PAnjab, the team stood AIR 6th in Endurance race. Conceiving, designing, building and testing a vehicle at student level and then competing against various other teams from different universities all over the India is a challenging task but exciting as well. It’s a demonstration of creativity, engineering expertise and engineering skills by a group of passionate students.
The best practice is conducted for selected students from the Third Year Mechanical Engineering from the Department. The students list along with login ID and password is sent to the Department from TATA Technologies, Pune. These login credentials are useful for the students to undergo online learning through Website link www.myigetit.com. Students develop their soft skills as well as technical aptitude through online video lectures by Industry experts having more than 15 years of experience. This makes students learn soft skills required for professional ethics to be followed by an engineer at the Industry. The Industry experiences shared through online video lectures makes the students aware of various technical aspects of advanced automobile design and limitations. The hands-on training of the CATIA v5 software is conducted at CAD/CAM Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The uniqueness of this best practice conducted by the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering for the students is not only to enhance skills but also make them ready for the Industry, hence the name Ready Engineer Program in association with TATA Technologies, Pune. Here, students learn from industry experts as well as earn certification from one of the renowned industry TATA Technologies, Pune.

After successful completion of the program, the participating students and faculty are given the certificate as a token of appreciation and achievement.
